How we work

Four stages, no surprises.

Consultancy commissions follow the same sequence whatever their scale. You will always know what you are receiving and when.

I

Brief & scope

A short call establishes the question you actually need answered. We confirm scope, deliverable and fee in writing before any work begins.

II

Interrogate

Designation, planning history, constraints, precedent and site. We look for the issues that determine whether a scheme is consentable.

III

Report

A written deliverable structured for the audience that has to approve it — officer, board, funder or client. Clear recommendation, not hedged options.

IV

Support

We remain available to respond to officer comments, present to stakeholders, or roll the work forward into a full architectural commission.

Common questions

Before you commission

Who do you typically work with?

Property developers, historic estates and landowners, land promoters, portfolio landlords, main contractors, charities and institutions holding listed stock — and other architectural practices needing specialist heritage or retrofit input on a project.

Are the fees shown fixed?

Yes. The fees on this page are fixed for the scope described and exclude VAT and any disbursements such as application fees or specialist surveys. Where a commission is larger or more complex than the standard scope — a substantial estate, for example — we will confirm a revised fee in writing before starting.

Can you work white-label for our practice?

Yes. Design Review & Technical Support is regularly delivered on our clients’ document templates and under their brand. We are happy to sign an NDA.

Do you work outside the South West?

Our studios are in Bristol and Bradford-on-Avon and we work throughout the Cotswolds and southern England. Desk-based consultancy — appraisals, consent strategy, retrofit assessment — is delivered nationwide.

Is the consultation fee really credited back?

It is. The £150 initial consultation fee is credited in full against any consultancy commission placed within 90 days of the call.

How do we pay?

Consultancy commissions can be placed directly through this site, or we can invoice on standard 30-day terms for established professional clients. Purchase orders accepted.
